Fatherland

I was inspired to write Fatherland after traveling to Ireland with my dad in March 2024. Though I enjoyed listening to live music in Galway and nearly getting blown into the ocean at the Cliffs of Moher, the most impactful place we visited was the Kilmichael Ambush Site — a battle that my great-grandfather fought in before immigrating to the United States. Getting to experience my family history with my dad brought Fatherland to life in my mind.

Fatherland is a dark comedy play featuring a father-daughter trip to Ireland. During their travels, Ronin and Fia search for a monument dedicated to Ronin’s war hero grandfather. Accompanying them on the trip are their imaginary friends Opal and Wayne, who are struggling to figure out their purposes in their humans’ lives. Over the course of the play, they try to help their humans navigate past issues in their relationship that go unrecognized by the humans themselves.

I directed the production in Fall 2024 (and gave my first cameo performance). Watch the full play below.
